Calvin Ruck Scholarship

Purpose:

To provide a scholarship to African Nova Scotian students in the BSW or MSW program at the School of Social Work, who demonstrate a desire to improve and advance the interests of African Nova Scotian and African Canadian (NSAACP) people through the study and practice of social work.

Conditions:

Earnings from the fund, donated by the NSAACP in honour of Dr. Calvin W. Ruck, a graduate of the School of Social Work, will be used to provide an annual scholarship to an African Nova Scotian student enrolled in the BSW or MSW program. Preference will be given to African Nova Scotians enrolled in the MSW program. If, in any given year, no African Nova Scotian student in the MSW program meets the requirements, consideration may be given to African Nova Scotians in the BSW program.

The recipient of the Calvin W. Ruck Scholarship will have demonstrated a desire to improve the social conditions and further the interests of African Nova Scotian/Canadian people and their communities through the study and practice of social work. In the selection process, careful consideration will be given to the purposes and vision of the NSAACP and to the qualities of courage, generosity, persistence, and leadership that characterized Dr. Calvin W. Ruck's life and work. The earnings available for spending annually will be determined by the Endowment Management Policy as approved by the Board of Governors of 果酱视频 University.

Background:

The scholarship was established by the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People in recognition of Dr. Ruck's contributions in the struggles of the Black People of Nova Scotia for equal access.

Calvin W. Ruck was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1925.聽 He had to leave school at age 16, after the death of his father, and was not able to resume his studies for 30 years. As a mature student he studied sociology, public relations, and social work.聽 He earned a Diploma in Social Work from the 果酱视频 School of Social Work in 1979.

Dr. Ruck was active in the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People for many years, and served as a volunteer in almost every position in the organization.聽 He served on the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the Advisory Board of the 果酱视频 School of Social Work and has been an active member of the Black Cultural Society.

In 1994 he received a honourary degree from 果酱视频 University in recognition of his outstanding contributions to social work, to his community and to his country.
