It was a successful weekend for the Tigers, with most teams finding themselves in the win column. The women’s cross country team claimed the AUS Championships while the men’s team placed second. The men’s volleyball team went 3-0 in interlock play and the women’s team earned their first victory of the regular season. Both basketball teams were in Laval and looked dominant.
Cross Country
The men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the Subway AUS championships this past weekend in Moncton.
In the women’s 6km run, Ellen Chappell placed second in a time of 23:06.09. Natalie Sachrajda followed close behind and finished in the third spot.  Rounding out the top twenty were Anna Von Maltzahn (fifth), Britany Macarthur (seventh), Emily Clarke (tenth), Michelle Reddy (twelfth) and Vanessa Linton (fifteenth).
Though Dal missed out on gold in the individual’s race, the Tigers came away with first place in the team rankings.

In the men’s 10km race, Matt McNeil was first to finish from Dal in the second place spot with a time of 33:07.67. Also in the top ten were Oliver Hatheway (fifth) and Matthias Mueller (eighth). Other runners included Bruce Russell (eleventh), Adam McGregor (fourteenth), Will Russell (fifteenth) and Graeme Wach (thirtieth).
The men’s team came in second place in the team rankings, right behind StFX.

Men’s Volleyball
¹û½´ÊÓƵ hosted the AUS-RSEQ Interlock event this past weekend. The team had a successful weekend, only giving up two sets the entire weekend. The hosts played the CIS reigning champions Laval Rouge et Or on Friday evening, taking the match in three consecutive sets.
The following afternoon the team played Montreal, winning the first set but losing the second. The team rallied back and took the next two sets, winning their second match. The team’s last match of the event was Saturday evening, against Sherbrooke. The Tigers took the match after 4 sets, sweeping the event Tiger Kristen O’Brien led the team with 47 points over the two-day event.
The Tigers will travel to Newfoundland next weekend to play Memorial.
Women’s Volleyball
The Tigers played Acadia in the War Memorial Gym in Wolfville this past Friday night. Dal took the first set easily by a score of 25-16. Acadia came back in the second, forcing a close, long set but Dal was able to secure the win, 29-28. Dal took the next set 25-18 and the match.
On offence, Desiree Nouwen and Marlee Powers led the way with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Nouwen also had an excellent game defensively, collecting 13 digs.
Dal will host Saint Mary’s on November 6th at 7:00pm.
Men’s Hockey
Dal travelled to Charlottetown to play UPEI this past Friday night. The Panthers started off the game with the lead, scoring on a power play in the first period. The Tigers were able to tie things up in the third period thanks to a goal from Chris Ivanko. The Panthers scored another goal, giving them the advantage with less than five minutes on the clock. The Tigers pulled their goalie for the last 1:25 but it wasn’t enough and the Panthers won 2-1.
Dal continued their weekend on the road with a game in Fredericton the following night. Patrick Daley put Dal on the board in the first period against St. Thomas. STU responded by scoring two goals in the second period, giving them the lead.
Andrew Wigginton’s goal evened the score at two early in the third period, but not for long. STU added another three goals before the game was over, giving them the win 5-2.
Dal will head to Wolfville to play Acadia on October 30th at 7:00pm.
Women’s Hockey
The women’s hockey team hosted Mount Allison University on Friday night at Alumni Arena. During the first period, the Tigers started off slowly and just couldn't handle the puck. Ten minutes into the game, the team took the lead when Sarah Robichaud got a shot past an unsuspecting MtA goalie after Robichaud fell down in front of the net.
Things continued to look promising for the Tigers early in the second period when Megan O’Neill added another goal for Dal. With 14 minutes left in the second, the Mounties got their first shot of a power play past Mati Barrett and added another goal soon after.
The Mounties continued to outshoot the Tigers in the last period and scored their third goal of the night with five minutes left on the clock. MTA came away with the win, 3-2.
The Tigers will play Saint Mary’s on October 30th at 7pm, followed by two home games on Friday and Saturday.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team played their first game of the weekend Friday evening, hosting Acadia at Wickwire Field. The close game was scoreless until the end of the first half when Acadia scored. Dal was left trailing for the remainder of the game until the 84th minute when Nathan Rogers scored his fifth goal of the season, tying the game (1-1).
The Tigers then hosted the league-leaders, the University of New Brunswick, on Saturday afternoon. The Varsity Reds started out strong, staying on the offense and taking a shot on net. Goalie Jason Ross made an excellent save and things started to turn around for the Tigers.
Dal played excellent defence, not allowing the Varsity Reds any more shots on net. Though the Tigers continued to outshoot the Varsity Reds, it wasn’t enough. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, giving the Tigers their second tie of the weekend.
The men finished the regular season in third place and will face Acadia in the first of two quarter-final games this Friday afternoon at the AUS championships at Saint Mary’s.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team played Acadia on Friday evening. The team played excellent offence, out-shooting the Axewomen, 11-5. Joanna Blodgett scored Dal’s first goal of the game at the 17th minute mark. Not giving the Axewomen any chance of a comeback, Kristy McGregor-Bales added a security goal for Dal in the 84th minute. The Tigers won 2-0.                                             Â
The following afternoon, the Tigers hosted the University of New Brunswick at Wickwire Field. Though the first half of the game remained scoreless, the Tigers kept challenging and out-shooting the Varsity Reds.
Elise Bilodeau put Dal on the board with their first of three goals shortly into the second half. Blodgett added another goal for the Tigers at the 48th minute mark. With only 1:25 left in the game, Blodgett scored her second goal when her shot rolled slowly past goalie Kelsie Hope.
Helping to record the shutout for Dal were goalies Shannon Junor and Taryn McKenna, who switched in with 20 minutes left on the clock.Â
The two-time defending AUS champions earned a bye to the semifinals with a second place finish in the regular season standings. They will face the top seed to move on from the quarter-finals on Saturday at Mount Allison.
Men’s Basketball
The Tigers participated in a pre-season tournament this past weekend hosted by Laval. The team played their first game of the weekend on Friday night against McMaster. The Tigers were able to come away with a win, 85-79.
Dal didn’t have the same luck the following day when they played the tournament hosts. It was a close game but Laval was able to come out on top by a score of 56-52. The Tigers turned it around on Sunday and had their best game of the weekend, beating Algoma, 80-63.
Kashrell Lawrence was the top performer for the Tigers and was selected to the tournament all-star team.
The Tigers will start their regular season with their first home game on November. 8th when they play UNB at 8:00pm.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team had a successful weekend at a pre-season tournament in Quebec City. The Tigers kicked off the tournament with a decisive 83-45 win over Algoma. On Saturday, they played hosts Laval. The Tigers took the win 60-50. Dal continued its winning streak on Sunday when they played Laurentian. The Tigers had an even better game, winning 74-52.
Tessa Stammberger was named the MVP of the tournament.
Dal will play UNB in their first regular season home game on November 8th at 6:00pm.Â
