Six Tigers are headed to Napoli, Italy for the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade this July. In addition to previously named coaches Cindy Tye and Rick Scott, volleyball players Courtney Baker and Julie Moore along with basketball players Sascha Kappos and Alex Carson have been named as participating athletes.

Women’s soccer head coach Cindy Tye has been named as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer team in Napoli. A National B level coach, this is not Tye’s first time coaching on the international stage. Last summer she served as an assistant coach for the U15 CONCACAF Championship team and previously lead the U20 team to a second-place finish at the 2015 CONCACAF championship.

This past fall was Tye’s third season with the Tigers, who finished the regular season 7-4-1 and in third place going into the playoffs. A defensively strong Memorial knocked the Tigers out of the AUS championship in the quarter-final.

Scott’s 11th season with the Tigers saw the team win their seventh AUS title in a row and a fourth-place finish at the U SPORTS championship. He capped off the successful season by being named the Tigers coach of the year. At FISU this summer, Scott will be serving as an assistant coach on the women’s volleyball team.

Also named to the women’s volleyball team as athletes are Courtney Baker and Julie Moore. Moore, a second year outside hitter from Halifax, was named a 2019 U SPORTS second team all-Canadian and AUS an first team all-star.

Baker has had a big 2019 so far. In addition to being named to the FISU team, she has also been named to Volleyball Canada’s NextGen team. A Lieutenant Governor Athletic Award nominee this past season, ahe received the Class of ’55 award as ¹û½´ÊÓƵ’s female athlete of the year after earning U SPORTS first team all-Canadian team and AUS MVP honours.

Men’s basketball teammates Sascha Kappos and Alex Carson have both been named to the FISU men’s basketball team. After winning their fourth AUS title in five years, the Tigers then hosted the U SPORTS Final 8 in Halifax. After a hard battle with Ryerson, the Tigers had to settle for a fourth-place finish. Carson and Kappos both earned AUS second team all-star nods this past season.

The 2019 FISU Summer Universiade is slated for July 3 to 14 in Napoli, Italy.
