Joseph WeatherbyJoseph Weatherby

Joe Weatherby, an instructor in the Chemistry Department, brings an innovative approach to teaching chemistry. Joe is more than a chemistry expert; he's interested in making chemistry and science accessible to everyone. He's deeply passionate about breaking down complex concepts for students at all levels. Joe loves using technology to enhance learning and ensure his teaching is both inclusive and forward-thinking. He's not just imparting knowledge; Joe emphasizes developing vital life skills in his students, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, emotional awareness, and independence. Beyond the classroom, he's interested in green chemistry, combining chemistry principles with environmental responsibility. He commits to being a positive influence in student's lives and will never say shy away from students' questions.

2022

Dr. Rebecca Babcock (Sessional Instructor) Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Dr. Becca Babcock is a writing instructor, writer, and actor. She has taught writing, English, and Canadian Studies courses at 果酱视频, and has previously worked as an instructional designer. She has published two books: a novel, One Who Has Been Here Before (Vagrant Press/Nimbus Publishing, 2021) and a short story cycle, Every Second Weekend (Blaurock Press, 2011). Her forthcoming novel (Vagrant Press/Nimbus Publishing) is due in spring 2023.

 

2021

Sue Goyette (Instructor) Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Sue Goyette lives in K'jipuktuk (Halifax). She has published a novel and seven collections of poetry, including Ocean (winner of the 2015 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award and finalist for the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize), The Brief Reincarnation of a GirlPenelopeAnthesis, and Solstice 2020: an archive (2021). Goyette is the editor of the 2014 Best of Canadian Poetry Anthology, the 2017 Griffin Poetry Prize Anthology, and Resistance, forthcoming from University of Regina Press (May 2021). Sue teaches in the Creative Writing Program at 果酱视频 University and is the current Poet Laureate of HRM.

2020

Dr. Brad Congdon, Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Brad Congdon is author of Leading with the Chin: Writing American Masculinities in Esquire, 1960-1989, which won the 2018 Robert K. Martin Prize from the Canadian Association of American Studies. During his time in Halifax, he has taught courses in English, Gender and Women's Studies, Contemporary Studies, and Marketing, as well as Humanities classes at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility. He received his PhD from 果酱视频's Department of English in 2015.

Dr. Paul Manning, Faculty of Agriculture

Paul is a postdoc and sessional instructor at the Faculty of Agriculture. He holds a Bsc in Agriculture and a DPhil in Zoology. His research focuses on insects in agroecosystems and combines techniques and theories from: toxicology, pest management, ecology, and citizen science. In the classroom, he has taught many of his favourite subjects, ranging from research methods to entomology. Paul's favourite part of teaching is watching students develop their knowledge, confidence, and creativity.

2019

Samantha Cukier, Health Sciences, Faculty of Health

Dr. Cukier鈥檚 lengthy connection with 果酱视频 is through part-time teaching that has been exclusively online. She developed several online courses for the School of Health Sciences and demonstrates strong student engagement in each course. Her assignments are designed to spark interest in students, often grounding them in the real world. Her use of online tools, such as rubrics, multimedia and discussion boards, was noted as being particularly helpful to her students.

Mark Wall, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science

Dr. Wall鈥檚 deep commitment to student learning shines through in his role as a first-year Chemistry lab instructor. He attends all the related lectures of his colleagues to align his work in the lab with theirs, resulting in significant improvements in the quality of teaching. He seeks self-improvement through Continuing Education courses, and has made effective use of technology to tackle challenges of class size and complexity in first-year Chemistry.

Laura Eramian, Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Laura Eramian has been with 果酱视频 on a limited term basis since 2011. Over that time Dr. Eramian has taught a total of nine distinct undergraduate courses at all levels. She was noted as an inspiration to students, many of whom credited Laura for their undertaking of an honour鈥檚 or master鈥檚 degree.

Prior to 2016, this award was known as the Contract and Sessional Instructor Award for Excellence in Teaching
