Undergraduate Programs

For students interested in a preparatory degree, gender and women鈥檚 studies programs provide preparation for professional schools and programmes in the fields of education, social work, counselling, journalism, the health professions, and certain areas of law. They also provide suitable preparation for graduate programs in interdisciplinary studies, cultural studies, and educational studies, as well as in gender and women鈥檚 studies. Students interested in proceeding to graduate work should enter a four-year degree program.

Students may enter 果酱视频's Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies program in the first, second, or third year of study. In many cases, students in second or third years may already have acquired some Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies credits through taking classes in the traditional disciplines or in other interdisciplinary programs that are cross-listed with Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies core classes.

Students can currently choose from four degree options in Gender Women鈥檚 Studies:

120-Credit Hour BA, Major in Gender & Women's Studies

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) with a Major in Gender & Women's Studies is a four-year, 120-credit hour program. As such, it provides a more comprehensive grounding in Gender & Women's Studies than the 90-credit hour BA. Students interested in applying to graduate school should enter a four-year degree program.

Departmental Requirements

  • At least 36 and no more than 54 credit hours beyond the 1000-level in Gender & Women's Studies, of which at least 18 credit hour must be beyond the 2000-level.
  • At least 3 different disciplines shall be represented in a student's selection of cross-listed Gender & Women's Studies classes.

120-Credit Hour BA, Double Major in Gender & Women's Studies

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Double Major is a four-year, 120-credit hour program. Students can combine Gender & Women's Studies classes with classes either in a tradiational discipline or with another interdisciplinary program such as International Development Studies, Canadian Studies, or Contemporary Studies.

Departmental Requirements

  • At least 60 and no more than 84 credits beyond the 1000-level in two allied subjects, one of which is Gender & Women's Studies, with no more than 48 and no fewer than 30 credit hours in either.
  • At least 18 credit hours in each of the two subjects chosen shall be beyond the 2000-level.
  • At least 3 different disciplines shall be represented in a student's selection of cross-listed Gender & Women's Studies classes.

120-Credit Hour BA, Combined Honours in Gender & Women's Studies

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Combined Honours is a four-year, 120-credit hour program. Students can complete the BA with Combined Honours by choosing Gender & Women's Studies and another subject from a wide range including Biology, Classics, Contemporary Studies, English, French, History, International Development Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Social Anthropology, and Theatre.

Students interested in any of these combinations or any other that involves Gender & Women's Studies and another subject should consult wtih the departments concerned.

General Degree Requirements

Please read the detailed description of the BA with Combined Honours program in the . After meeting the first year requirements, students must complete:

  • Minimum of 66, maximum of 84 credit hours beyond the 1000 level in the two allied subjects combined, not more than 48 credit hours nor fewer than 30 credit hours being in either of them. Grade must be "C" or better; otherwise, course will not count toward degree.
  • Within the last 90 credit hours, 6 to 24 - depending on the number selected in the honours subjects - elective credit hours.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Where a class selected from the Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies 鈥渓ist鈥 is cross-listed with a class in the allied subject, the class may not be double counted (i.e. it may be counted toward one subject or the other, but not both).
  • Total credit hours required above 1000 level = 72
  • Total credit hours required for degree = 120
  • Required GPA for graduation = 2.00

  • Required standing for graduation: Arts and Social Sciences subjects require a GPA of 2.70 (3.70 for first class) on courses in the honours subjects. Science subjects (see below) require a GPA of 3.00 (3.70 for first class) in courses in the honours subjects.

Departmental Requirements

In addition to meeting the Degree Requirements set out by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Gender & Women's Studies students must also meet the following requirements:

  • At least 3 different disciplines must be represented in a student's selection of Gender & Women's Studies classes (in disciplines other than the allied subject).
  • The following classes are required:
    • At least 6 credit hours from the following: GWST 2066.03, GWST 2170.03, GWST 2191.03, GWST 2192.03, GWST 2301.03, GWST 2500.03 (Normally this requirement should be met in the second year of the program).
    • At least three Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies classes (9 credit hours) must be taken beyond the 2000 level.
    • At least one 6 credit hour 4000-level Gender & Women's Studies class, either Directed Readings, Special Topics, or cross-listed class (Normally this requirement should be met in the frouth year of the program).
    • To meet the Honours Examination requirement when Gender & Women's Studies is the Major subject, students will prepare a research paper under the supervision of a Gender & Women's Studies faculty member and will take GWST 4900X/Y.



90-Credit Hour BA, Minor in Gender and Women's Studies

This minor is available to students registered in a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program. A BA (90 credit hour) degree program with a minor in Gender and Women's Studies is also available with the following requirements:

  • 18 credit hours to a maximum of 27 credit hours beyond the 1000 level in Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies
  • At least 3 different disciplines shall be represented in a student鈥檚 selection of cross-listed Gender and Women鈥檚 Studies courses
