Chemical Engineering (MEng, MASc, PhD)

The responsibilities assumed by Chemical Engineers include a wide range of activities such as research and development of novel products and processes, the design, development and operation of process plants, and management of technical operations and sales. Research opportunities leading to the Masters and Doctorate degrees are offered in a wide range of topics within the Department as well as in conjunction with other departments and a number of research centres on the campus.

For the MEng program, students’ admission files are reviewed for two intakes per year, for September and January start dates. Applicants who apply by April 1 will be considered for a September start and will be notified by May 1. Applicants who apply by August 31 will be considered for a January start date and will be notified by October 1. 

Prerequisities

Possession of a baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by ¹û½´ÊÓƵ University, in which the language of instruction is English, or four years of full-time post-secondary instruction at a university where English is the primary language of instruction and in a country where English is the principal language; otherwise, a satisfactory score on an approved English language examination is required. The Program requirement for the TOEFL is 580.

To be admitted to the MASc or PhD programs, an applicant must be accepted by a professor into his/her research program in addition to meeting the other requirements for admission.

Program requirements

  • The MEng degree requires 9 courses.
  • The MASc degree requires 4 courses and a research thesis.
  • The PhD Degree requires 4 courses if a candidate already has a research Master’s degree; otherwise, it requires 8 courses. An original research thesis is also required.

Length of program

  • MEng - typical time to complete is 2 years
  • MASc - typical time to complete is 2 years
  • PhD - typical time to complete is 3-4 years

Research areas

These encompass, among others, the traditional areas of environmental control, plastics and polymers, pulp and paper, instrumentation and process control, petrochemicals, petroleum and natural gas processing, and energy conversion and utilization, as well as the growing fields of biotechnology, food processing, composite materials, corrosion and protective coatings, and manufacture of microelectronic components.
