Gillian Hatch – Student Success and Engagement Advisor

Gillian Hatch, Student Success Advisor

Pronouns: She/her

I came to Student Success after 3 years in recruitment at Dal AC. I love that I’ve been able to follow the students I helped through the admissions process into their first year(s) at Dal AC. I did my undergrad at the AC where I majored in Animal Science and minored in Animal Welfare, back when it was a minor and not a certificate. If you’re not sure what the difference is between a certificate and a minor, come see me!

I truly enjoy helping students navigate their university experience and balancing university with everything else going on in their lives. I’m available to help students navigate course selection, prepare for a future career or professional program, or help ease the transition to university life. Whatever the quandary or query please stop by Student Success, we are here to help!

Bev Zinck – Accessibility Coordinator

Bev Zinck, Coordinator of Student Access Supports

Pronouns: She/her

I come to my position with over 20 years of experience in psychology working with children, youth and families.  Throughout my career, I have strived to help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. It is a privilege to now apply that experience to helping students at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ.

In my Coordinator role, I work alongside students, faculty and staff to develop and implement support plans that reduce barriers for people with documented disabilities, religious observances or other protected characteristics under Nova Scotia Human Rights legislation. I have an interest in positive psychology and how this can impact campus life for the better.

I look forward to connecting with you whether to answer questions about accessibility or assist with the process of academic accommodations.

Ashley MacDonald – Writing Advisor

Pronouns: She/her

I am in my fourth year of the PhD in Agricultural Science program at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ's Faculty of Agriculture. My research area is Agricultural Business with a particular interest in sustainability and data-driven decision-making. This is my third degree from the Faculty of Agriculture, having previously completed my undergraduate (’14) and Master’s (’19) at the AC. Between my undergraduate and Master's degree, I worked as a customer service and sale representative and location/operations manager in the tourism and transportation industry.

All that to say, I have experience in both academic and professional writing! Good, effective writing takes a lot of practice, but it is an incredibly valuable skill to have! I am excited to share some of my top tips and tricks with students in my role as Writing Advisor.

The Writing Centre team can help students with any piece of communication they are working on, be it research papers, lab reports, cover letters, and everything in between! Our focus is always on helping students develop their skills and acting as a resource to help them succeed.

Carolyn Bartlett – Registered Nurse

Carolyn Bartlett, Registered Nurse

Carolyn is looking forward to providing leadership during this period of transition as she brings considerable senior management experience with the Nova Scotia Health Authority to this interim role. Carolyn is looking forward to returning to her position as a Registered Nurse within Health Services once a new Director is hired.

I joined Health Services at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ in 2014. I have over 30 years of nursing experience, working in health care in various positions—direct patient care, obstetrics, surgery, critical care (Intensive Care, Coronary Care & Emergency). I have also managed the Intensive Care units and the Emergency Department locally for 10 years. Prior to coming to ¹û½´ÊÓƵ I held the position of Director of Quality & Decision Support (Quality, Risk Management, Data Analysis, Infection Control) at Colchester East Hants Health Authority for seven years. I also have experience in research coordination, project management and as an educator for the Faculty of Nursing at St Francis Xavier University as well as ¹û½´ÊÓƵ. I have also worked in forensic nursing at the Nova Scotia Medical Examiners Service.

In health care I'm always learning something new and am committed to ongoing education as new research emerges and changes in health care develop. Nurses have the opportunity to empower patients with knowledge. I  truly enjoy meeting students with diverse backgrounds from all walks of life and helping them with their health-care needs. As a nurse I try to advocate for my patients, challenge them, inspire them, and provide the quality of care I would want if I was in their shoes.

Jeanne Rutledge - Administrative Assistant

Hello! My name is Jeanne Rutledge, and I’ve been working with the Student Success Centre for the last 2 years in the Access Supports office. This year I’ve joined as the Accessibility and Learning Skills Assistant. I’m excited to continue supporting students with accessibility, and to expand my role through services that aim to help students with time management, organization, study skills, tips for note taking, and test taking strategies.

I started my own academic journey at the AC after graduating high school, unsure of where I was headed, and reluctant to leave home right away. After two years I moved to ¹û½´ÊÓƵ University in Halifax, where I graduated with the BSc in Psychology after switching majors from Biochemistry. Our academic paths are not always straight forward, and the Student Success Centre is here to help you stay on track. If you are struggling, please drop us an email! I can guarantee that one of our team members will be able to help out, or point you in the right direction.
