Food Sustainability

Solving food-related problems

Food production and food distribution have far-reaching environmental, social and cultural implications. Our food sustainability researchers are passionate about addressing several critical global issues:

  • How can we better ensure all people in the world have sufficient access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food?
  • How can we make food more available to people at a lower environmental impact?
  • How can we maintain a viable local farming sector, today and under climate change?

You could make a difference

Food systems play a major role in most of the things we worry about on a global and local scale. For example, over a third of the world鈥檚 greenhouse gas emissions come from food production and distribution.

Effect real change and influence policy by joining our team of researchers as we work to improve food sustainability both at home and around the world. Here are just a few examples of the many food sustainability research projects you could be involved in:

  • critically evaluating whether eating locally does result in lower environmental impacts
  • helping farmers adapt to the effects of climate change
  • working with Inuit communities to understand the social and ecological effects of shared community freezers

Find out what our researchers are up to:

Peter Tyedmers

Dr. Tyedmers is passionate about understanding the sustainability of food systems. He focuses on life cycle resource and environmental impacts of food production and supply chains. Organizations from around the world seek his expertise in these areas.

Kate Sherren

Dr. Sherren focuses on the resilience of food production systems and lifestyles to environmental change. Her work with farmers in Australia about rotational grazing contributed to national discussions about adapting agriculture to climate change.

Michelle Adams

Dr. Adams focuses her research on the integration of food and energy systems within agriculture and agro-industrial settings to address issues of food and energy security in emerging countries.聽 Working with researchers in Latin America provides interesting opportunities and perspectives for her graduate students.
